At our meeting last night of the Council to Preserve Public Libraries, organized by the System Board, several members of the Commissioners County Task Force on Public Library Funding were in attendance. They reported that they will be presenting their recommendations to the Commissioners at the September 8 Commissioners meeting beginning at 9am 150 North Queen Street. September of 2010 would be a year from when they were first given their charge last September (2009) of studying how funding for Public libraries in the County could be improved. The formation of the Task Force was reported in the Intell last September 2009.
Also, I also learned yesterday, that there will be a hearing on State Funding for Public Libraries today. Rep. Steve Samuelson, will conduct a House Majority (Democratic) Policy Committee hearing on library funding in Pennsylvania. Glenn Miller, Executive Director will testify for PaLA and other witnesses include Clare Zales and several librarians from the Lehigh Valley. The hearing will take place on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the Prosser Auditorium at Moravian College, 1200 Main Street in Bethlehem. The hearing begins at 3:00 and should run until about 5:00.
Here are two opportunities to have your voice heard, one at the County Level and one at the State Level. Even if you cannot attend in person, you may email Rep. Steve Samuelson through the PaLA website www.palibraries.org and the Lancaster County Commissioners at McCue@co.lancaster.pa.us.
